I have a 1989 GTI! My car temp gauge starts climbing to hot while I'm idling in traffic to where the engine wants to shut off. But as soon as traffic lets up and the car starts moving then the temp drops to halfway point! I have an aluminum radiator and just changed the thermostat! What else could it be?

Your cooling fan isn't kicking in to blow air across the rad.

It could be the fan switch, relay, or fan motor..

Jumper across the two terminals of the fan switch in the thermostat housing. If the fan comes on, then the switch(sensor) is bad.

Changed the coolant temp sensor! Let idle! Temp got to 184 fan didn't kick on ! Wiggles the wire where fan connects then fan came on! Let idle! Temp gauge dropped, fan didn't shut off! Don't see the fan relay anywhere! Mechanic said take to auto electric to check wiring?
