Hello folks, I have a question regarding the different exhaust manifolds that I encountered while searching for a donor engine.

One manifold is cast iron 4 into 1 shorty style with a tubular pipe leading into the cat. very similar to the 3cyl style.

Other style noted is a welded tubular 4 into 1 with a short round cat bolted to the outlet and a bolted reducer channeling the exhaust rearward where it mates with the under car exhaust.

The question is are they interchangeable http://teamswift.net/posting.php?mode=post&f=27#

The cast manifold does not fully cover the egr hole on the head, I have pictures but have not yet figured out how to get them from my iphone and attach them here.

Are you needing a stock for your 1.3 soch? What year car is the motor off of?

Hello rp91gt, The car is a 96 2door, the engine installed is from a 2000 Metro, the 5speed is from a 1996 1.3 sohc 8v.

I have purchased a style of exhaust manifold from the recyclers. 1.) A cast iron shorty 4 -1 similar in design to the 3cyl manifold. This is what I have. This manifold will bolt up to the 3cyl cat, but not at the correct angle. To get it to bolt up I had to force the cat against the floor board. When the car can move under its own power, a muffler shop can cut re-align and re-weld the cat pipping - do not see a problem here. This manifold leaves what appears to be a egr hole in the head -- uncovered--. This I consider a problem


From Craigslist 2.) A flanged welded tubular 4 - 1 shorty style with the cat bolted vertically to it and a curved collector to channel the gasses rearward. the 3cyl exhaust will not bolt up. This style of manifold has a small welded tube from #4 tube to the manifold flange where the egr hole is. This manifold cannot be obtained in our local recyclers because they cut the cat out ( vs unbolting ) thereby ruining the manifold.

Big question then When I finally start the engine up will this open hole cause any problems? I have pictures that illustrate this a whole lot clearer than my feeble attempt here, unfortunately they are too large a file and I lack the expertise to crop them to this sites specification.

I am sure that this has come up before and would like info from members that have performed this swap.

I think I know what you are referring to. If I were to guess, the manifold which doesn't cover the egr is a 1.3 8v manifold. The 1.3 16v did come with two styles of manifolds, one built in cat and one without. Around here, I think 98&99 had the cat in the pipe, 2000&2001 had the cat in the manifold. Also, the 16v head has a bolt pattern really close to swift gt exhaust pattern, so on the off chance you know of any gt parts, a gt exhaust manifold will work as well with only slight difference.
Thinking out loud, I'm fairly sure the egr port is just covered by intake on the swift models, so not sure if it technically would matter if the exhaust doesn't cover that other end of the port, if the exhaust manifold seals otherwise. Basically you just wouldn't be sending exhaust gases over to the plugged port.

The fed sohc 16v has no provision for egr with the 1.3 intake. You will have no problems as it sits. It's how they came from the factory.

The egr hole is there for the 1.6 esteem (same head) and possibly Cali emissions.

The 1.3L exhaust manifolds up to 1997 had egr ports no built in cat and will not work on 1998 and later cars. bolt holes and ports
are different.
1998 and up exhaust manifolds 98-99 no built in cat . 2000 and up built in cat. The built in cat manifolds are very restrictive on
the exhaust. I would not want to race on one of these manifolds. There is no egr on these engines.
1989-1994 GTI DOHC exhaust manifolds have an egr port, different shape exhaust manifold to engine ports, and different bolt
hole pattern. These will not fit a 98 and up head.

The gti ports are the same shape just 2mm larger. I have modified a stock gti exhaust manifold to fit.

I think I did a thread on how to mod a gt manifold to fit the SOHC 16. I did it to a genie header for my 2000 car.

I have installed gt manifold on the 16v head. Also used an unknown brand gt header after on my 16v. I don't remember having much to change, and ports lined up and were very close.

i've seen a few guys hammer fit cheap ebay honda headers onto g13bb engines.

they looked okay and seemed to work okay. :wink:
