My issue is regarding a "new" 1988 Chevy Sprint four door wagon I recently picked up. Initially, headlights and everything electrical worked fine. All of a sudden I notice the radio doesn't work, then the horn, then the headlights, dome lights, and dash lights.

First things first, I ended up replacing all the fuses, whether they needed changed or not. Still nothing. I cleaned the ground connections at the left and right fenders against the firewall. Still nothing. The fusible link behind the battery is connected. Still at a loss.

The only thing I did to the car (which I do with all older cars I purchase) was to entirely strip the interior for cleaning and reassembly. There doesn't appear to be any bare wires exposed, nor does the wiring harness appear to have any chafes or shorts running down the inside of the car.

I have found the wiring diagram in the MK1 85-88 specifics page and will be chasing the rabbit down the hole. In the meantime, I'm curious to know if 1) anyone else has experienced a similar problem and 2) are there any simple recommendations that I'm not thinking of immediately that I can research.

Thank you.

Something tells me you unbolted the main accessory/lighting ground whilst stripping the carpets out.

The other possibility is the lighting dimmer control which is prone to burning/shorting out on MK1 cars.

Thanks, Tom. I think I was able to find the problem. The PO must have replaced the headlight bulbs but each headlight was missing the collar that tightens the bulb into the housing. Upon investigation I noticed he did not fully clip the left headlight in, which probably resulted in arcing of some sort and the problems I was experiencing. After clipping them in fully, and replacing the collars with spares, everything came back on, and I haven't had problems since.
