I have not installed the injectors yet ,,, I convinced myself my issue was head related. The popping or blurb I was getting out the exhaust reminded me of when I had a bad valve.
So I started pulling spark plug wires.
When I pulled cyl 3 wire it ran
When I pulled wire 2 it continued to run
When I pulled wire 1 it died telling me cyl 1 was carrying the others.

So I pulled my new plugs that have only been run on the trailer.

Plug 1 was black and was a shinny black like wet but not oil fouled.
Plug 2 was exactly the same as plug 1
Plug 3 was a dry black almost a fluffy snow looking with a few white spots showing through.

So now I've convinced myself my issue is cylinder 3 and possibly 2 also.

Time for compression test. Compression on cylinder 1 was 125 warm not hot. Of course my compression tester failed to hold the pressure after testing cylinder 1.

Not one to let proper procedure stop me I yanked off the head.

All valves were black except the number 1 cylinder exhaust which was tan/brown.
I flipped the head and they all held gas ( update,,,, the number one exhaust valve ended up leaking. It's the brown / tan one in the pic ) but once I added gas I could see sparkles mixed in with the carbon soot. I found this in all three combustion chambers. They were not attracted to a strong magnet.
I'll disassemble the head tomorrow and inspect the valves and seats but so far they look good.

Pistons have no pre ignitin damage and cylinder walls look good, you can still see my hone marks but the sparkles are coming from somewhere. Bearings possibly so at this point I'm so far in I might as well pull the block.

I did notice when looking at my block on the intake side there are two large water passages by the corners. The passage located on the front of the engine near the water pump is mostly blocked by my head gasket with just a sliver open.

I've tried to load up some pics but for what ever reason my new phone won't load them up to my photo bucket account.

I've been down this road before so I should be good but I welcome any comments or input.

The brown valve eventually failed the gas test for leaking.

The wet look is from the gas I used to check for leaking valves.

The blocked water passage is in the upper right corner.

Ok. I can feel some scratching in cylinder 2 and 3. I haven't inspected closely but don't need to.It's not piston scuffing.
I've been reading up on replacement Pistons here and see Vitara are the Pistons of choice. Am I correct the ones I want are 1.6 8v Pistons? And just get them however much over the cylinders have to be bored?
Stupid question I know but how about replacement rods? I know , I know stupid question.
Thanks for hanging in there with me.

I would ReRing (Cleaning the ring Glands) and hone the cylinders.
Those pistons look good
Inspect your head Bolt really close for strech marks any marginal bolts don't reuse PITCH
get a good headgasket
I use the Graphite...
but not really putting much demands on my rig's
.
Get a Vinton about $40
.
why not a Mike Cove (3tech) head package with the porting and three way valve grind Stainlees valves Brass incerts.?
.
....................................my two cents
.
......jv&s
..

I ported and polished it myself and had the head rebuilt locally with stainless valves. I didn't have the guides replaced though.
I could just re ring it but will have a machine shop do the hone this time. I did it myself last time.
When all is said and done I'm still gonna have to deal with my original rich condition. Seems the leaking valve off set my richness enough in one cylinder to keep the others going. Just my new hypothesis.

I'm still here and just wanted to post an update.
I have all the parts to rebuild it but waiting to get up some $$for machine shop work.
Two things I discovered that we're not correct.
Valve guides were really worn so I got new valves and bronze valve guides from 3Tech. I'm going to mount my turbo using vee band clamps this time as my turbo kept loosening up on me. Long story short at one point I had a steel turbo gasket fail and when I replaced it I noticed a section of the gasket was missing. Turns out it went into my turbo and ate the fins off of the hot, drive side of my turbo shaft. I'm having an issue trying to post a pic of it but it's really eaten up.
I'm thinking this May have contributed to the feeling of running rich since the engine thinks it was getting boost and fueling it accordingly. I still was getting boost but not like it should of. I couldn't tell I had a boost issue. Now put that with my badly worn valve guides and I'm pretty sure I've found my issues.
I may be down but I'm not out.
Edd

So the pic of the guy with the chain saw pulled up first and took a minute for the rest to load. Was really funny when you put the first and second pictures captions with the first picture.
