I have a spare manifold like the picture, and was thinking of doing the following:

Expand the hole for carb as much as possible until the edge of the wall,
leaving 3-4mm left at the edge.

Install a 10mm thick aluminum plate, and make two holes.

Carve the two holes such as they make a funnel so there is free passage down.

Then I should be able to mount 2 barrel carb, for example weber.

Now, aluminum is soft so it is feasible to make the adapter plate by hand tools.

Does this idea make sense or is it a waste of time?

Reason is that I see no luck in obtaining a new manifold.

I say why not if you have a spare! I love these kinds of retrofits. I just recently built an exhaust header from flat stock and straight tubing for a turbo project. Been running it for 2 months now with no problems! Worst case is it doesnt work and you put your spare on.
