 Post subject: possible triple carb g10

so my motor took a crap, and im thinking to ditch the mk1 motor with its coolant heated intake manifold, and go with a mk2 motor and use three mikuni carbs.
im looking at the vm24 or vm26.
assuming the 89+ motors do not have coolant running through the intake manifold,

has anyone done this, and how hard was it?

also, steel intake manifold problems?

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Switching to bike carbs. For 1 they are cheaper.

A question I keep running into and can't find an answer is how to run a 3 carb system. Say linkage and such. How to mount them. And what to do with my MK1 vacuum advance dizzy. And pretty much all those vacuum lines running to the carb on it now.

I was thinking of maybe Mikuni or even Yamaha carbs. But am still try'n to figure out how to run them. I sure as hell don't want fuel dumping behind a closed valve.

If someone could steer me in the right direction here. Or just give me some info. I really want to ditch the Hitachi.

Nemo, I have 2 '90 metros and the intake for a '92, they all have coolant passages in the main plenum floor. The manifold and throttle is supplied hot coolant thru 5/16" hoses. You wouldn't need to connect the hoses if you wanted to run a cold manifold, you will loose the benefit of the early fuel evaporation. The effect would be on warm up and cold weather driving.

There are many references in this section, just have to look. For bike carbs you will need a flange with stubs and use rubber or silicon boots to connect carbs to manifold. IIRC the carbs for a 1100 CBR are the preferred. Another thing to think about is the vacuum for the brake booster. Will you combine the vacuum signals into one for the booster or just run off one cylinder, possibly causing a lean situation on the cylinder?

I have a couple Solex carbs off Volkswagens I was thinking of using one on my trike when I get that far. I will make a plate to mount on the Geo manifold. It will require some jetting since it was on a 1600 cc engine.

You want to stay with the mk1 head it has more potential for power! The ports are better and the combustion chamber is better!

I was wondering as well about the brake booster. (I have an MK1 hemi head). Also the vacuum line running from the distributer. Can the lines be t'd from 3 to 1? or will that run a weak vacuum? Also what about using GSXr1100 carbs and just cutting one of the carbs off and using that linkage system?

I've seen the GSXr carbs referenced too. There are a couple good stickies on the subject. I kicked the idea around the shop a couple times but kicked it to the curb. I remembered how much I hated setting the carbs on my Kawi H1 triple.

Well I found a mount anywhere vacuum box Image

Would be a good application for the vacuum issue to the dizzy and the booster.

I'm not sure how much the itbs are. But bike carbs can be had on the cheap. I guess it's really a matter of making a manifold, linking the carbs, mounting and vacuum lines. Would be nice if someone had info on how to link the 3 carbs together and sync them.

There was something I saw on youtube some guy named geo jeff was selling a set of 3 carbs linked. Was mounted to 1.0L with the newer style head. Don't know if that makes a difference? Think he was asking $500. Which seems steep. But who knows how much work was put into it.
