Being an Oz car it would have been sold with the close ratio gearset, but may have been replaced by a Cino gearset at some point. Search posts by Dattman. There is a special extra casting on a GTi box and if yours has this chances are its has never been replaced.

Ok thanks everyone for your help i am sure the box has been replaced with a 1.3 sohc box.
will a 1 liter box fit the 1.3 dohc engine as the ratios are close enough for what i want

It will fit, but the differential, and final gear are different. The already weak differential in the 1.0 is smaller and less likely to handle abuse, but will work.
